Steam regional pricing: the cheapest storefronts at list price

Steam prices every game separately in every storefront, and the gaps are large. We read the list price of 30 popular PC games straight from the Steam store in each country we track — 1,577 readings — and added them up into one basket, priced in the 48 countries that sell all of them.

The whole basket costs $1,001 in India and $2,041 in Israel — against $1,581 in the United States. That is 2.0× for the same 30 games.

List prices, not sale prices

On the day we read them, 16% of these prices were discounted. Steam sales start and end at different times in different storefronts, so comparing sale prices across countries mostly measures the sale calendar. Everything here is the regular list price; a sale lowers it everywhere, but not on the same day.

Storefronts priced in US dollars

In Argentina, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Egypt, Georgia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Pakistan and Türkiye Steam does not price in the local currency: games are listed in US dollars. A falling local currency therefore no longer makes those storefronts cheaper, and a local card pays a conversion on top.

Not every game is sold everywhere

Some storefronts do not sell every game in the basket — Georgia (1 missing), Indonesia (1 missing), Russia (19 missing) and Vietnam (14 missing) — so they are left out of the totals rather than ranked on a smaller basket.

Who sets these prices

The publisher does. Steam suggests a price for each currency based on the US one, and most publishers follow it, which is why the storefront rankings above look alike from game to game; some set their own, which is why the per-game table is not a simple multiple of the basket.

Steam ties an account's store to the country of its payment method and location, and moving it takes a purchase with a payment method from the new country. Buying cheap keys from another storefront is often blocked at activation by region locks. Every game's price in every storefront, with the date it was read, is on the PC games pages.
